Studying Gender Studies

Gender studies developed out of the feminist movements and critical theories of the 20th century. Gender studies has since established itself as a separate field of teaching and research, as well as being anchored in a wide range of disciplines, such as (gender) history, legal (gender) studies and (gender) sociology. Gender studies examines how social order is established through gender, both in the past and in the present. Gender studies are characterized by a high degree of reflexivity and a critical approach: They invite us to question social dynamics and power relations that produce and shape society and (university) knowledge production. A central characteristic of gender studies is its interdisciplinarity as well as its methodological and theoretical diversity.

There are many opportunities to study Gender Studies in Switzerland. The content and focus of the study programs vary according to the research priorities of the individual institutes. The different theoretical traditions that shape gender studies in French- and German-speaking countries are also reflected in the orientation of the programs offered.

An overview of the universities and institutes where gender studies can be studied in Switzerland is provided by the Cultures and Societies portal and the Gender Campus.

A Swiss-wide course catalog with gender-relevant courses is provided by the Gender Campus shortly before the start of each semester.

A compilation of information on the respective orientation and the programs offered at the various locations is currently being compiled. This will be published here.
