Almanach No. 2
Almanach brings together a selection of texts produced through our journalistic writing mentorship programme, which supports researchers in sharing their research with a wider audience.
This second issue celebrates the memory of a major figure in the art world who died in 2021: the Lebanese-American artist, poet and writer Etel Adnan (1925–2021). Born in Lebanon to a Greek Christian mother from Smyrna and a Syrian Muslim father, she grew up in a multilingual environment (Greek, Turkish, French and Arabic) before moving to California, where she studied fine arts at Berkeley. Her journey is characteristic of a generation of transcultural artists who, through abstraction, explored themes of belonging and mobility in their work. The cover features her 1976 work Allah.
