Schweizerisches Idiotikon

Schweizerisches Idiotikon documents the Alemannic dialects of Switzerland from the Late Middle Ages to the present day.

Mandate and services

The term Idiotikon derives from the Greek word idios, meaning separate, own, private. It denotes a dictionary that contains the vocabulary peculiar to a particular geographical region. Thanks to source material from the second half of the 19th century, Schweizerisches Idiotikon also includes words and turns of phrase that have now largely vanished from use.

Schweizerisches Idiotikon was established in 1862. It is published by Verein für das Schweizerdeutsche Wörterbuch. Its staff are employees of the Verein.
