Swiss Inventory of Coin Finds
The Swiss Inventory of Coin Finds is the centre of excellence for archaeological numismatics. Minting, dates and the context in which coins are found yield information on the economic and social history of past ages.
Mandate and services
The number of coin finds rises and falls in parallel with civil engineering activities (roads, tunnels, infrastructure) and the expansion of settlement areas. The Inventory of Coin Finds collects full data on coin finds in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and publishes them in a database. The institute works closely with Cantonal archaeological agencies. It is internationally networked through its membership of the European Coin Find Network (ECFN) and researchers in other countries have access to its documentation.
The Inventory of Coin Finds was founded in 1992 as a scientific support service under the patronage of SAGW. Its staff are SAGW employees.
