Mandate and services

The Historical Dictionary of Switzerland is intended for the general public as well as for academic audiences. The articles reflect the current state of research and cover all eras and specialist areas of history. There are articles on topics, places, spaces, biographies and families.

The Historical Dictionary was established in 1988. The idea came from the Federal Department of Home Affairs, the impetus for implementation from the Swiss Historical Society (SGG) and SAGW. For its first 30 years, the Dictionary received direct federal funding. Since 2017 it has been a long-term undertaking of SAGW. Its staff are SAGW employees.
