Escritores ensayistas del siglo XXI: desplazamientos entre lo local/nacional y lo latinoamericano

Felix Terrones, , Universität Bern

Since the era of independence, the essay has been a genre that Latin American writers have used to examine their identities, to both affirm and challenge traditions, and to engage in dialogue with one another and with other literary movements. In the 21st century, amidst globalization, writers continue their nomadism, their exile, and their wandering, with the aim of creating a space for their literary concerns.

What does it mean to be a Latin American writer in the 21st century? Without neglecting their local/national horizons, Alberto Fuguet, Jorge Volpi, Leonardo Valencia, Fernando Iwasaki, Horacio Castellanos Moya, and Roberto Bolaño offer various attempts at answers that advance post-nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and transnationalism. The result is a linguistic terrain, open and in the process of growth, which nevertheless remains ideologically problematic due to its omissions and silences.

This book is the first comprehensive survey of the Latin American essay since the beginning of the new millennium.
