Between 31 August and 1 September 2017, a symposium entitled The Right to Food and Adequate Nutrition’ was held. During this forum, four thematic panels were organised to address the current challenges facing the right to food in the region. The aim was to discuss how to ensure the timely availability of sufficient food, whether produced domestically, supplied through imports or via food aid, whilst examining the sustainability of family farming as a food supplier and the impact of genetically modified products on producers’ activities. The event led to this special issue of the SSA Journal.
