Brigitte Schnegg Prize
SAGS awards the Brigitte Schnegg Prize for outstanding scientific work in the field of gender research in Switzerland that claims to make a socially transformative, socio-political contribution.
Presentation
The Brigitte Schnegg Prize was created in honor of Prof. Dr. Brigitte Schnegg, who directed the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies (ICFG) at the University of Bern until her sudden death in spring 2014 and was Vice-President of SAGS from 2010 until her death. The prize is awarded every two years at the Members’ Assembly, for the first time in 2017.
Latest Awards
The Brigitte Schnegg Prize 2025 has been awarded to Pamela Ohene Nyako for her outstanding doctoral thesis. The jury also awarded three honorable mentions.

Brigitte Schnegg — Biography
Brigitte Schnegg (1953–2014) (photo below) was a historian, professor and pioneer of Gender Studies in Switzerland. A committed feminist, she worked from the 1980s onwards to establish women’s and gender history and feminist scholarship in academia. From 2001, she headed the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Bern (ICFG) and contributed to building the Swiss Gender Studies network. From 2010, she also served as co-president of the Swiss Association for Gender Studies.
