Cadáver del objeto: basurología y escatología en El Techo de la Ballena

Isabel Josefina Piniella Grillet, University of Bern

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the ephemeral nature of the objectual art of El Techo de la Ballena. Particularly, the aesthetical project that represented Carlos Contramaestre's exhibition of 1961, «Tribute to necrophilia» will be addressed. To situate this experience in the context of the Venezuelan plastic scene, the influences of Informalism, Dadaism and Surrealism are presented becauseof their inclusion of the extra-artistic object as a form of political protest. El Techo de la Ballena proposed a break with the literary and artistic tradition through experimentation with elements traditionally excluded from aesthetic practices: the use of obscene and swear words and the incorporation of waste and garbage into plastic works.
