Exposé
Dans le domaine de l’architecture, le luxe concerne un champ vaste de formes de manifestations et d’articulation. Ce champ multiple s’étend entre les pôles de l’excès dévalué et des pièces uniques glorifiées. Ainsi apparaît dans l’architecture de manière exemplaire ce qu’on peut constater généralement à propos du luxe: le polymorphisme, l’ambiguïté et les jugements ambivalents sur l’environnement que nous aménageons artificiellement et artistiquement. L’usage et le gaspillage de matériaux et de processus se conditionnent mutuellement et s’entrecroisent à la fois. La table ronde va mettre en discussion cette contradiction productive de notre environnement bâti. Au centre, on trouvera quatre thèmes qui caractérisent depuis les Lumières l’articulation, la fonction et la signification du luxe architectural: le rapport de la contrainte et de l’utilité, le rôle ambivalent de l’industrialisation dans la construction, la tension entre les objets architecturaux et l’espace construit, ainsi que la question de la consommation (ir)responsable de ressources matérielles et spatiales qui en résulte.

Abstract
In the field of architecture, luxury takes many forms. The luxury segment covers a vast array of things, with devalued excess at one end and glorified uniqueness at the other. Architecture thus exemplifies the polymorphism, ambiguity, and multivalency of the environment that we artificially and artistically create for ourselves. In this context, the use and waste of materials and processes are both interdependent and intersecting in equal measure. The event introduced here brings this productive contradiction of our built environment up for discussion. The debate will focus on four themes that have shaped the articulation, function, and meaning of architectural luxury from the Age of Enlightenment to the present day: the relationship be- tween obligation and utility, the problematic role of industrialization in building, the tension between architectural objects and built space, and the ensuing question of the (ir)responsible consumption of material and spatial resources.
