The eikones/African Studies Summer School 2024 is dedicated to "When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting", an exhibition curated by Koyo Kouoh and Tandazani Dhlakama.

The exhibition, which was first shown at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art in Cape Town in November 2022 and will be on view at Kunstmuseum Basel in May 2024, explores the self-representation of People of Color/Black people and celebrates global Black subjectivities and Black consciousness from a pan-African and pan-diasporic perspective.

Participants are expected to visit the exhibition in advance and familiarize themselves with a selection of readings and visual material to prepare for the program, which will take place in Basel from Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 7, 2024.

The registration deadline is March 31, 2024 and interested applicants must provide their personal details, institutional affiliation (if any) and briefly explain their interest in participating in the summer school. Please register at: eikones@unibas.ch and contact PD Dr. Lorena Rizzo at lorena.rizzo@unibas.ch if you have any questions.
