Interactive online tool systemrelevant!

Dear colleagues

I am excited to share that our interactive online tool systemrelevant! is now live. Based on interviews with 37 urban essential workers in Zurich and Lausanne, we created the fictional characters of store clerk Ivana, daycare worker Sarah, cleaner Silvina, and public transport driver Peter. The tool invites users to follow these four essential workers through their everyday lives in the city of Zurich and to learn more about their work, families, friendships, and housing situations during and after the COVID19 pandemic through their reflections and chat exchanges.

systemrelevant! amplifies the voices of these everyday heroes who keep our cities running yet are usually not heard. It is aimed at a broad audience interested in work, care, precarity, housing, transportation, and urban life, available in German only.

We developed systemrelevant! as part of the NFP80 Covid19 in Society programme within the project Urban Essential Workers at the Spatial Development and Urban Policy – SPUR – unit at ETH, under the supervision of David Kaufmann and in collaboration with Mirko Winkel and Carolin Schurr from the mLAB at the Geography Institute at the University of Bern.
