Assistant in Modern English or American Studies, from 1 June 2017 (University of St Gallen)

The Department of English has a vacancy for an Assistant in Modern English or American Studies (70%) from 1 June 2017. The appointment will be for two years initially, including a probationary period, and can be extended for a further two and a half years.

Applicants should have completed a Masters degree in English and/or American studies and be working towards a doctorate in that field. An excellent command of English and fluent German are required. Good computing skills and good numeracy for administrative tasks would be a decided advantage.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide practical help in preparing teaching materials such as handouts and course readers, to actively contribute to the administration of the English department, and to engage in academic research. She or he can expect considerable time for research, a stimulating scholarly environment, and mentoring support.

50% Lecturer in English as a Foreign Language, starting 1 August 2017 (University of Fribourg)

The Language Centre of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, invites applications from suitably qualified experienced EFL professionals for a 50% post as Lecturer in English as a Foreign Language.

The main responsibility of this part-time appointment is EAP (English for Academic Purposes) teaching but also involves development/applied research and administration.

Responsibilities:
The postholder will teach and assess 7 (or more) hours of English language courses mainly for students across the university in the autumn and spring semesters (14 weeks each) and contribute to other tasks, including participation in oral course placement interviews and (start of the semester) testing, course development, relevant projects, participation in university committees and workgroups, materials development, and relevant applied research.

Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a master’s degree (research-based), preferably in TESOL, English Applied Linguistics, Foreign Language Education or a closely related field. Applicants are also required to have substantial experience in university language teaching and to be expert users of oral and written English as well as EAP language specialists. Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills and a willingness to work collaboratively with students and staff from across the university are required. A doctorate would be a welcome asset.

Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in either French or German, the university’s official languages, and have at least a receptive knowledge of the other language. Preference will be given to versatile candidates with proven EAP experience and familiarity with (Swiss) multilingual contexts. The successful applicant is expected to commence teaching on 18 September 2017.
